Medications
Medications can be defined as „substances or combinations of substances, which are presented as having properties for treating or preventing human or animal illnesses and diseases or which can be administered or applied to a human or animal body in order to either establish a medical diagnosis, or to restore, correct or influence human or animal physiological functions by exerting a pharmacological, immunological or metabolic action.“
The scope of this area is just as complex as its definition.
Most medications may only be sold to consumers in pharmacies. Medications (Medikamente) can fall under the following categories:
- Medications that do not have to be bought over-the-counter and can also be found outside of pharmacies (freiverkäufliche Medikamente)
- Medications only dispensed by pharmacies (apothekenpflichtige Medikamente)
- Medications only available through a doctor's prescription (verschreibungspflichtige Medikamente) and
- Narcotics (Betäubungsmittel) - a special doctor's prescription is necessary for narcotic substances
The desired effect of a drug is, of course, the alleviation or cure of an illness, disease or condition. Nevertheless, it is very important to address the following issues with each patient:
- Indications
- Contraindications
- Drug interactions
- Side effects
- Dosage
- Misuse ...
It is therefore very important to hold a detailed consultation to ensure that a medication is used correctly.
